Grants

Ramesh Agarwal, National Institute for Aviation Research executive director and Bloomfield Distinguished Professor of Aerospace Engineering, was awarded $100,000 by the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corp. for the "State Match for Airworthiness Assurance Center of Excellence."

Elizabeth Behrman, associate professor, physics, was awarded $20,000 by the University of Arizona for the project "Simulation of a Cytoskeletal Quantum Neural Net." 

Donald Blakeslee, professor, anthropology, was awarded $15,000 by the Department of Interior/Bureau of Reclamation for the project "Curation of Museum Collections."

Alex Chaparro, assistant professor, psychology, was awarded $7,344 by Larksfield Place for the project "Quality of Life Initiative."

Barbara Chaparro, visiting assistant professor, psychology, was awarded $13,608 by Larksfield Place for the project "Physical Activity Tracking and Examining Web site Usability with the Elderly."

William Groutas, Endowment Association Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, was awarded $20,640 by Supergen for the project "Biochemical Studies with Prostate Specific Antigen and Related Human Kallikreins."

William Hendry, professor, biological sciences, was awarded $50,272 by the Texas Tech University Health Science Center for the project "Neonatal Endocrine Disruption in Male Reproductive Development."

Raymond Hull, professor, communicative disorders and sciences, was awarded $2,500 by the American Academy of Audiology for the project "Aging and Temporal Processing: Can Expanded Speech Help."

Gawad Nagati and Kamran Rokhsaz, associate professors, aerospace engineering, were awarded $58,855 by the Razak Airplane Co. for the project "Conceptual Design of a Family of Aircraft Using Propulsion Wing." 

James Snyder, professor, psychology, was awarded $20,913 by the Oregon Social Learning Center for the project "Preventing Adjustment Problems in Young Siblings."

Elaine Steinke, associate professor, School of Nursing, was awarded $103,917 by the National Institute for Nursing Research for the project "Sexual Counseling Intervention after MI."

Gary Toops, associate professor of Russian, received $3,572 from the International Research and Exchanges Board to participate in the 1999 Southeastern Europe Area Studies Development Program. The grant allowed him to attend a Bulgarian language seminar at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia July 18-Aug. 14.

Janet Twomey, assistant professor, industrial and manufacturing engineering, was awarded $25,000 by the National Science Foundation for the project "CAREER: Neural Network Strategy for Machining When Data is Sparse (Supplemental)." 


Appointments

Dae Chang, who retired this spring after a 24-year career as a criminal justice professor at WSU, has been granted emeritus status.

Delores Craig-Moreland, associate professor, School of Community Affairs, has been appointed by Gov. Graves to the newly formed Kansas Advisory Group on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Craig-Moreland has been a key player in the development of juvenile justice in Sedgwick County and has served as a key adviser to the Juvenile Justice Authority in Topeka.


Awards

Ramesh Agarwal, National Institute for Aviation Research executive director and Bloomfield Distinguished Professor of Aerospace Engineering, is one of five members of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers to be inducted into its 1999 College of Fellows.

Douglas Sharp, director, School of Accountancy, was named Outstanding Faculty Adviser by Beta Alpha Psi, a national accounting fraternity. He was one of six winners nationwide.

Tom Veltman, storeroom storekeeper, Central Services, received the President's Award from the Midwest Professional Association of College Testing Personnel.


Creative activity

Ronald Christ, professor, School of Art and Design, had his artwork included in the "6th Annual Realism Invitational" at van de Griff Gallery in Santa Fe, N.M., July 2-30 and in "Summer '99: A Group Exhibition" at the Elliott Smith Contemporary Art, St. Louis, June 25-Aug. 27. He was visiting artist and presented a slide lecture on his artwork at the International School of Art in Umbria, Montecastello di Vibio, Italy, May 24, and the University of Tulsa Summer Art Program in Montone, Italy, June 12.


Publications

Sharon Hartin Iorio, associate dean of Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and associate professor of communication, has had her book "Faith's Harvest: Mennonite Identity in Northwest Oklahoma" published by the University Press of Oklahoma.

Gary Toops, associate professor of Russian, had an article, "Syntactic Calquing: Reflections of German Verb Governance in Czech and Upper Sorbian," published in the journal Die Welt der Slaven. 


New to WSU

Randall Fooshee and Glenn Gunnels have joined the Media Resources Center staff as audio visual technicians. Jim Pearce has been promoted to manager of the MRC's Campus Media Services after a national search.
