The new list of high school scholars for the Wichita State University Dean's Scholars Program has been chosen.
This is the second year for the scholars program, which was started in an effort to keep more of the Wichita area's best and brightest students at home.
The program targets high school seniors from area public and private schools whose interests and abilities closely align with WSU strengths.
To qualify, the students had to be admitted, although not committed, to attending WSU. They also had to attend a specially designed program once a month during the school year. About half of the programs showcased academic opportunities, and half introduced the scholars to social aspects of collegiate life at WSU.
Because of their outstanding test scores and leadership abilities, the competition for these high school students mirrors highly recruited student-athletes.
Last year's students who are now freshmen at WSU are still receiving the benefits of being on the scholar's list.
They meet often with Christine Schneikart-Luebbe, dean of enrollment services. They also have had the opportunity to learn from Keith Pickus, associate provost and vice president for academic affairs and research; Peter Cohen, dean of the College of Health Professions; and Ron Matson, associate professor of sociology.
The goal is to provide the students with the opportunity to meet with key WSU administrators and learn firsthand the benefits of being a Shocker.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed introducing the freshman class of Dean's Scholars to all that Wichita State has to offer," Schneikart-Luebbe said. "They have fully embraced the collegiate experience. In addition to their academics, they have involved themselves in Greek life, the Student Ambassador Society, Student Government, Student Activities and intramurals, among others. Each of them has now become an ambassador for the new class, and they are anxious to share all that they have learned with the second class of Dean’s Scholars."
