Workshop: Business Booster Series: Capitalize on Creative Business Ideas
Location: Devlin Hall

Capitalize on Creative Business Ideas
Instructor: Dr. Gaylen Chandler

In this session we will discuss where business opportunities come from. The best business ideas emerge as effective solutions to problems. These solutions could likely result in unique or improved products, services, and more effective and efficient business processes. Thus, creative problem solving is the foundation for viable business ideas. Specifically we will address three issues:

- Listening and paying attention to customer problems
- Learning how to identify root problems rather than treating symptoms
- Experimentation as a method for achieving high quality solutions

Gaylen Chandler is W. Frank Barton Distinguished Chair and Professor. Dr. Chandler teaches in the WSU Entrepreneurship program and regularly consults with start-up and growth companies. His research interests include opportunity recognition processes, the role of ongoing learning in new venture development, and new venture teams.

- General Public: $50 per workshop or $249 for all seven sessions
- WSU students: $5

Tallgrass Film Festival: GREENGRASS free environtmental films
Location: 12-1 p.m. picnic at the Ulrich; 1-5 p.m. films and panel discussions at CAC Theater

The Greengrass program of environmentally themed films returns to the 11th annual Tallgrass Film Festival in partnership with the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University and its current exhibit Nature's Toolbox; and Backwoods Wichita.

Films will screen on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 17 and the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 18 at the C.A.C. Theater with a picnic lunch to be served at noon on the patio of the Ulrich to kick off the Friday program.

"More Than Honey" features some of the most spectacular footage of bees ever put on film. But this is not just a picturesque nature documentary, it's also an investigation into a mystery. What is killing off the world's bee populations at an alarming rate? This dire situation is devastating to the human species, too; without bees, one-third of the world's food would not exist. To find answers, Academy Award-nominated director Markus Imhoof travels the world, talking to and observing the inner-workings of beekeepers, farmers and scientists.
(SIFF) (Thursday, Oct. 17, 7:30 p.m.)

"Tiny" is a documentary about home and how we find it. The film follows one couple's attempt to build a "tiny house" from scratch and profiles other families who have downsized their lives into homes smaller than the average parking space. Through homes stripped down to their essentials, the film raises questions about good design, the nature of home and the changing American Dream. (Friday, Oct. 18, 1:30 p.m., with Director)

"Bringing It Home" tells the story of hemp's past, present and future through interviews with hemp business leaders and entrepreneurs from all over the globe. It shows historical images and media clips and footage filmed in the United Kingdom, Spain, Washington D.C., California and North Carolina. The documentary aims to magnify dialogue about hemp in order to facilitate America's transition to a more informed, sustainable and healthy future. (Friday, Oct. 18, 3:30 p.m., with Director)

Opera and Musical Theatre Series presents Susannah
3-day event: 10/17/2013 - 10/19/2013
Location: Duerksen Fine Arts Center, Miller Concert Hall

Based on the biblical tale of Susanna and the Elders, Floyd sets his American opera in the Appalachian Mountains, using musical idioms ranging from simple folk tunes to soaring Puccini-like melodies.

Susanna is a young girl living in an isolated area with her brother, Sam. When Olin Blitch, a charismatic preacher arrives in town, the local church elders set out to find a place to baptize the congregation. Unseen by her, they spy Susanna bathing naked in the creek. The men report her to the community, who denounce her as a slut. Preacher Blitch pays a call on her, and harshly demands that she repent. Susanna refuses, saying she has done no wrong. Blitch seduces her and is horrified to find that she is innocent. When her brother finds out what has happened, he shoots Blitch dead. Olin Blitch is one of Samuel Ramey's signature roles.

This production coincides with Mr. Ramey's 2013-14 residency. He will co-direct this production with Marie King and also portray Blitch in alternate performances.

Tickets for this event are $16 with discounts available and go on sale Sept. 26. For more information, call the WSU Fine Arts Box Office at 316-978-3233.
