Make a Difference Day
Various Locations

Wichita State's faculty, staff and students continue to have a pivotal impact in the metro area. Join us for Shocker helping hand as we recognize National Student Day with service projects and Community partnerships. The goal this year is to complete 2,000 hours of service in two days.

Service sites will include: Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank, Community Clean Ups, Red Cross and more. This is a campus-wide effort to create change.

Admission is free.

Volleyball Tournament: Big Pink Volleyball
Location: Heskett Center Gymnasium

Big Pink Volleyball is a fundraising event for breast cancer awareness presented by the Student Wellness Action Team (S.W.A.T.). The event is a double-elimination volleyball tournament with a four-foot wide, hot pink volleyball.

Each team will be five to seven players, and the fee is $10 per person, which includes a t-shirt. Registration forms can be found at www.wichita.edu/shs under "featured links."

Registration forms and fees are due by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Student Health Services in 209 Ahlberg Hall.

Proceeds from the event will be split between two local non-profit organizations: Victory in the Valley and Early Detection Works.

Exhibition: Nature's Toolbox: Biodiversity, Art and Invention

"Nature's Toolbox: Biodiversity, Art and Invention" is an exhibition of the works of more than 40 international artists in a wide range of media. Harnessing technology and inspired by nature's amazing design concepts, the show's innovative, eye-capturing art helps us understand and appreciate the life-or-death interdependence between the 10-20 million species on earth, including humans and the quality of the environment we share.

Volleyball: Wichita State vs. Evansville
Location: Charles Koch Arena

Current Wichita State students can pick up free tickets with a valid Shocker ID card at the University Bookstore, Heskett Center or at the ticket office in Charles Koch Arena.

General admission adult: $8
General admission discount: $6*#
General admission group: $5**

# Faculty and staff members are eligible to receive discounted price for volleyball season and single game tickets (limit of 2 tickets).
* Discount applies to children 2-12 and adults over the age of 65
** Group discount for purchases of 10 or more tickets in advance of the gates opening

WSU Symphony Orchestra Benefit with Sam Ramey
Location: Duerksen Fine Arts Center, Miller Concert Hall

International opera star and Wichita State alumnus Samuel Ramey will appear in concert with the WSU Symphony Orchestra. "An Evening with Samuel Ramey" features four arias from his most famous role: Mephistopheles in Goethe's Faust. The critically-acclaimed bass will sing selections from Boito's Mefistofele, Berlioz' The Damnation of Faust, Gounod's Faust, and Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress. The orchestra will also perform Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals with Mr. Ramey serving as narrator as well as Gounod's Ballet Music from Faust.

Astronomy: Photography: Andromeda
Location: Lake Afton Observatory

The astrophotography program will feature the nearby galactic neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy. For this program you will need to bring a telephoto lens - around 300 mm - and a cable release. The telescope will be used as a platform to follow the galaxy's motion across the sky during the exposure.

Admission:
Adults - $5
Children ages 6-12 - $3
Children under 6 - free
There is also a special family rate where 2 parents and their immediate minor children or grandchildren get in for just $15.

The observatory is located about 20 miles southwest of downtown Wichita on MacArthur Road at 247th Street West in Lake Afton County Park. It is immediately north of the lake, just off MacArthur Road. Lake Afton can be reached by any of the following routes: west from Wichita on U.S. 54 to the Lake Afton sign at Viola Road three miles past Goddard, then three miles south and one mile east; or southwest on K-42, 7 miles to Schulte and nine miles west on MacArthur.
