details... Art:21 Preview Party: CompassionIn this season of the groundbreaking PBS series featuring artists of the 21st century, Art:21 explores the breadth of artistic practice today. Each one-hour TV program is organized around a theme, allowing audiences to analyze, compare and juxtapose the profiled artists.
Compassion, sympathy, empathy, concern and consideration are the focus of the artists featured in the first Art:21 Preview Party hosted by The Kansas African American Museum.
South African William Kentridge is best known for his animated films created with painstaking effort by drawing an image, filming it, erasing a portion, filming again and repeating the process. Columbian sculptor Doris Salcedo's 167-meter crack in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Museum in London became a metaphor for the trying experiences of immigrants and the borders separating differing cultures. American Carrie Mae Weems' stark silhouettes have probed African American identity and persistent racism.
Season Five marks the third time that the Ulrich has collaborated with local organizations to provide public preview parties. Audiences see the newest episode, in its entirety, before release on PBS. Join your friends to see the latest in art of the 21st century. Enjoy refreshments, drawings for Art:21 books and DVDs and conversation about the artists and ideas that shape contemporary life.
This event is part of Art21 Access '09, a celebration of contemporary art and Season 5 of Art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century sponsored by Art21. Art21 Access 09 is held at more than 300 museums, schools, libraries, art spaces and community centers and is organized in collaboration with Americans for the Arts' National Arts and Humanities Month.
Location: The Kansas African American Museum, 601 N. Water Street
