Author's Talk with Lee GutkindSpeaking on Robots with author Lee Gutkind, "Almost HumanMaking Robots Think." What are the robots of the 21st century really like? Who is constructing them? What are their jobs? Enter the cutting-edge integration of robots into everyday human life, the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon Institute. "Almost Human: Making Robots Think," a 2007 book by Gutkind, documents six years observing young roboticists and their bold conceptual machines from Pittsburgh to NASA to the most barren desert on Earth. Join Gutkind as he shares insight into the experience of those who are ushering in a new age of thinking robots in intelligent manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, space-related robots, nano-machines, computer vision and graphics and anthropomorphic robots. Author, journalist, documentary filmmaker, consulting NPR editor and founder and editor of the groundbreaking literary magazine Creative Nonfiction, Gutkind has placed himself in diverse situations researching dozens of books, profiles, essays and anthologies. This event is in conjunction with "Robots: A Cultural Icon in Contemporary Art," on view through Dec. 18. Fifteen artists explore society's fear and fascination with robots as they evolve from science fiction to modern reality. "The Burning Room" by Darrel A. Holnes, winner of the WSU New Playwright Competition, explores the myriad relationships between men and women, Latino culture and spirituality. Isabel, a Colombian immigrant, and her Mexican American boyfriend Pedro are celebrating his sister's birthday when Isabel is confronted by her "cousin" Mario and the life she thought she left behind in Medellin. Pedro and his brother-in-law Raul, both Houston cops, begin to investigate Mario. On their journey they encounter a supernatural twist they didn't bargain for. This new play will be premiered by the excellent WSU Student Director Paula Makar. Ticket for this event are $10 with discounts available and they go on sale Oct. 21.
