Sam Ramey Scholarship Benefit ConcertLocation: Duerksen Fine Arts Center, Miller Concert Hall Since fall 2012, internationally renowned opera star and Wichita State alum Samuel Ramey has been a Distinguished Visiting Artist in residence at Wichita State University. Join us as Ramey's 2012-2013 residency concludes with a concert of arias and opera scenes. Aspiring singers who have had the opportunity to work with Ramey will show what they have learned by performing a wide variety of operatic repertory from Bellini to Bernstein. Ramey will host the evening and join the students in singing the grand finale. Proceeds from the concert will augment the Samuel L. Ramey Professional Development Fund, which helps WSU students launch their careers. WSU performance majors in voice and instrumentalists who play in the opera orchestra can apply for funding. Most important auditions are held in New York, Chicago or other major cities. In addition to auditions, competitions and summer workshops are among the career enhancing opportunities for which WSU students may seek support. Astronomy: Journey to Jupiter2-day event: 3/15/2013 - 3/16/2013
Location: Lake Afton Observatory, 20 miles southwest of downtown Wichita at MacArthur Rd. (39th St. S.) and 247th St. W. in Lake Afton County Park. It is immediately north of the lake, just off MacArthur Rd. The Observatory presents "Journey to Jupiter." The journey's first stop will be Earth's nearest celestial neighbor, the moon. Here, the mission is to use the Observatory's telescope to explore its craters, smooth plains and mountains. The next stop is the gas giant, Jupiter. Here, the many moons, and astounding cloud features of the largest planet in our solar system will be explored. "Journey to Jupiter" will be presented on the following evenings: January 18-19, 25-26; February 15-16, 22-23; March 15-16, 22-23 and April 19-20.
