The Kansas Regional Independent Inventors Conference, co-sponsored by Wichita State University (WSU), will be held at the National Center for Aviation Training facility in Wichita. A pre-conference workshop the evening of April 18 will provide attendees with an overview and prepare them for getting the most out of the conference.

Over the course of the event, attendees will have the opportunity to hear inspiring and informative presentations from experts in the field of entrepreneurship and marketing.

Guest speakers include Marcia Stevens, Regional Director of WSU Kansas Small Business Development Center; Wayne Bell, District Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration; and A.J. Anderson, Director of the Wichita District Office for the U.S. Department of Commerce. Keynoting the event will be Bruce Kisliuk, USPTO Deputy Commissioner for Patent Administration. Additionally, experts from the USPTO will also address the process of applying for a patent or trademark and provide insight on the many initiatives and programs to assist applicants available through the USPTO.

A sampling of the presentations offered at the Kansas Regional Independent Inventor Conference includes workshops on advanced claim drafting and how to conduct a search of trademarks. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet in brief one-on-one sessions with USPTO staff and IP professionals to discuss specific intellectual property concerns.

The cost for this 2 1/2 day event is $90. Space is limited, so register early.

Astronomy: Journey to Jupiter
2-day event: 4/19/2013 - 4/20/2013
Location: Lake Afton Observatory, 20 miles southwest of downtown Wichita at MacArthur Rd. (39th St. S.) and 247th St. W. in Lake Afton County Park. It is immediately north of the lake, just off MacArthur Rd.

The Observatory presents "Journey to Jupiter." The journey's first stop will be Earth's nearest celestial neighbor, the moon. Here, the mission is to use the Observatory's telescope to explore its craters, smooth plains and mountains. The next stop is the gas giant, Jupiter. Here, the many moons, and astounding cloud features of the largest planet in our solar system will be explored. "Journey to Jupiter" will be presented on the following evenings: January 18-19, 25-26; February 15-16, 22-23; March 15-16, 22-23 and April 19-20.

$3 for ages 6-12

Stephen Imbler Piano Scholarship Auditions
Location: Wiedemann Hall

The Annual Imbler Piano Performance Competition offers one lucky piano major at Wichita State a $6,000 scholarship for their junior and senior years. The competition and scholarship were started by the generous donation of Mr. Stephen Imbler, WSU Class of 1983, who wanted to promote the excellent performance skills of WSU pianists.

Wichita Jazz Festival Gala Concert
Location: Duerksen Fine Arts Center, Miller Concert Hall

Critically acclaimed jazz singer Tierney Sutton will bring her award-winning band to Wichita this year for the 42nd annual Wichita Jazz Festival. Their modern and innovative arrangements of traditional jazz standards have been a hit among jazz listeners for over 20 years. For this special concert, they'll be joined by conductor Mark Laycock and the Wichita State University Symphony Orchestra to create a night that's sure to be a musical high point for Wichita in 2013.

Astronomy: Photography: First Quarter Moon
Location: Lake Afton Observatory, 20 miles southwest of downtown Wichita at MacArthur Rd. (39th St. S.) and 247th St. W. in Lake Afton County Park. It is immediately north of the lake, just off MacArthur Rd.

The Observatory features a photography program each month where anyone with a 35mm single-lens reflex camera (that's a camera with a removable lens) can take celestial photographs using the Observatory's telescope as a giant telephoto lens. At 10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12 and again on Saturday, March 16, the photography program will feature the largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter. On Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10 p.m. the astrophotography program will focus on the beautiful Orion nebula. Then, on Saturday, April 20 at 10:30 p.m. the first quarter moon will be the subject of the photography program.
