Naftzger Young Artists Recital
Location: Wiedemann Hall

Join us for the 73rd Naftzger Young Artists Auditions & Music Awards. The competition, which is administered by the Wichita Symphony, will host 53 young musicians who will compete for $11,000 in prizes. Contestants will compete for a single $5,000 prize, plus $2,000 prizes in each of the three divisions -- piano, instrumental and voice. A new category has been added this year: the Naftzger Fund for Fine Arts Musical Comedy Special Prize. The winner of this award will receive $2,000. The competition is open to residents of Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma who are enrolled in any college, university or conservatory and non-resident students attending college in Kansas, Oklahoma or Missouri.

The Naftzger Young Artists & Awards are made possible by the Naftzger Fund for Fine Arts, Inc., created by Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Naftzger in memory of L.S. Naftzger, Ida L. Naftzger and Lee Southwell Naftzger II. John E. Naftzger was very proud of this competition that was started in 1940 to remember his parents and brother. With the 2013 competition we will honor John Naftzger, who passed away in March. It is from his passion and enjoyment of music that this legacy will continue for many young musicians.

At least two contestants from each division will be selected to perform in the finals. Results and presentation of awards will immediately follow the final round of auditions.

Open to the public.
Admission is free.

Astronomy: Life Story of a Star
2-day event: 4/26/2013 - 4/27/2013
Location: Lake Afton Observatory, 20 miles southwest of downtown Wichita at MacArthur Rd. (39th St. S.) and 247th St. W. in Lake Afton County Park. It is immediately north of the lake, just off MacArthur Rd.

The Lake Afton Public Observatory presents "Life Story of a Star." Much like us, stars are born, they live, they grow old and they die. In other words, they have a life cycle. During this program, visitors will use the observatory's 16-inch telescope to take a look at objects in the night sky that are representative of the various stages in a star's life cycle. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe Jupiter, which some people consider a "failed" star, a cluster of newly born stars, a binary star, and a nebula. 'Life Story of a Star" will be presented on the following evenings: January 4-5, 11-12; February 1-2, 8-9; March 1-2, 8-9, 29-30; April 5-6, 12-13 and 26-27.

Admission:
$5 for adults
$3 for ages 6-12
Under six admitted free
Family Rate: Mom, Dad, and all their immediate children - $15
Please note that we are unable to accept credit or debit cards

For more information, call (316) 978-3991 or email robert.henry@wichita.edu.
