Lecture: Senior Wednesdays: Images of Depression-Era Work in Kansas: Post Office Murals
Location: Ulrich Museum of Art

From 1936-1942, the Fine Arts Section of the Treasury Department partnered with local citizens to select images for post office murals. The murals celebrated the productivity of local citizens during the Great Depression. Dr. Lorraine Madway, curator of Special Collections and university archivist at WSU Libraries, shares how the resulting depictions of agriculture, industry and state history preserved local autonomy while projecting New Deal values of optimism and communal progress.
