Dr. Weems is the Willard W. Garvey Distinguished Professor of Business History at Wichita State University. This lecture presents additional research Dr. Weems has conducted on Anthony Overton. Between 1922 and 1929, Anthony Overton presided over three of the largest black-owned enterprises in the United States: the Overton Hygienic Manufacturing Co.; the Douglass National Bank; and the Victory Life Insurance Co. This unprecedented entrepreneurial achievement resulted in Overton gaining widespread acclaim as the "merchant prince of his race."
