2-day event
Event Time:8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Location: The observatory is located about 20 miles southwest of downtown Wichita on MacArthur Road at 247th Street West in Lake Afton County Park. It is immediately north of the lake, just off MacArthur Road. Bring Grandma or Grandpa out to the Observatory for the program: Exploring the Milky Way. A grandparent will receive free admission when accompanied by a paying child. (Limit one free admission per paying child.)

The Milky Way is not just a hazy streak of distant stars visible in the night sky on a clear, dark night. Exploring the Milky Way , one of the programs featured at the Lake Afton Public Observatory from September through December, will investigate some of the wondrous objects found in our galaxy. During this program visitors will have the opportunity to observe a gas giant planet in our solar system; multiple star systems; clouds of interstellar gas and dust; clusters of stars; and a nearby spiral galaxy much like the Milky Way. While visitors are observing these objects through the telescope, the Observatory staff will share some of the amazing facts about them.

"Exploring the Milky Way will be presented from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings, September 6-7, 20-21, and 27-28; and from 7:30 to 10:00 pm on Friday and Saturday evenings, October 4-5, 25-26, November 1-2, 22-23, 29-30, and December 20-21.

Admission is just $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12; children under 6 are admitted free. There is also a special family rate where 2 parents and their immediate minor children or grandchildren get in for just $15.00.
