CDS 750Y Language and Literacy: The Reading, Writing and Spelling Connection
Instructor: Kenn Apel, PhD, CCC-SLP
Location: 223 Hubbard Hall

Success throughout the school year depends to a great extent on students' reading, writing, and spelling abilities. Thus, it is important that educators be familiar with how these literacy skills are acquired and the strategies that can be used to facilitate and encourage their development. This workshop will take an integrative look at the development of reading, writing, and spelling and then provide suggestions for assessment, instruction, and intervention in these areas. Based on current research and theory, the factors that contribute to literacy development will be highlighted and the impact these factors have on students' developing literacy skills will be reviewed. Using this information, specific guidelines and suggestions will be offered for assessment, instruction, and remediation of literacy skills, including measures to help prevent later literacy deficits.
