Word Study: Lessons for Successful Decoding and SpellingInstructor: Kenn Apel, PhD, CCC-SLP (kenn.apel@wichita.edu)The success of students' academic, vocational, and social endeavors often hinges on their reading and writing abilities. This workshop will take an integrative look at two specific areas of literacy development: word-level reading (decoding) and spelling. Specific guidelines and suggestions will be offered for assessment, instruction, and remediation.This workshop is one of three special education workshops being offered as part of a KSDE State Improvement Grant initiative for continuous improvement in special education. These workshops are for teachers, administrators and parents who are interested in providing better services for students with disabilities and those with high intellectual ability (gifted). They are designed to not only provide information but to allow for discussion, participant interaction, view materials relevant to various topics, and develop action plans for application of the information in the school setting and at home.Location: Suderman Hall, Hughes Metropolitan Complex (29th St. N. & Oliver)Cost: Free to the public, but seating is limited to 90.
