"Drawing on the Past to Prepare for Future Challenges in Research and Practice"by Nickola Wolf Nelson, PhD, CCC-SLPABSTRACT: Being relevant to the needs of individuals with communication disorders/special needs requires clinicians to plan interventions based on the priorities of clients, their families, and (in the case of school-age children) their teachers. The development of comprehensive models for guiding practice must consider the contextually-related concerns of those most intimately involved, the evidence from research on best practice, and the complex, integrated nature of neurocognitive-psycholinguistic processes. Dr. Nelson is the Charles Van Riper Professor of Speech Pathology and Audiology and Director of the Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Health Studies program at Western Michigan University. She earned her doctorate from Wichita State University in 1973.This presentation is sponsored by the WSU Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association in recognition of Better Hearing and Speech Month, which begins May 1. It will be preceded by poster presentations of research conducted by undergraduate honors students and graduate students. Attendees are also invited to a reception afterwards to honor Dr. Nelson and present her with the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Outstanding Alumni Award.Location: Ahlberg Hall, room 201Go to www.wichita.edu/csd for registration details.
