Soapbox Series Lecture: Sign Language and the Deaf Community

The presentation will discuss issues involved with service in the Deaf Community, such as, rehabilitation counseling for the deaf, vocational rehabilitation, education and the interpreter's role. The benefits of sign language for hearing individuals will also be addressed and include discussion on baby talk and how sign language stimulates earlier cognitive development and the visual portion of the brain. A brief discussion on American Sign Language and its role as a foreign language will be followed by discussions of Deaf people's experiences and opinions and the experiences of Hard of Hearing individuals.
