Originally from Indiana, this wonderful musician has been with Wichita State University since 1986. Professor Black holds degrees from Ball State University and the University of New Mexico. He has been the principal tubist for the Wichita Symphony Orchestra since coming to WSU and he is also a member of the Wichita Brass Quintet. Professor Black is a noted teacher and performer who has been featured in numerous regional Tuba and Euphonium Conferences throughout the United States. He has been a reviewer for the "new materials" section of the International Tuba/Euphonium Journal since 2001. He can be heard performing with the Galliard Brass Ensemble on recordings from the Music Heritage Society Label.

This recital will feature a new work he helped commission, James Grant "10 Blind Dates for Solo Tuba" -2013, Kendall Prinz "Diversions" for tuba and piano - 2009 James Barnes "Concerto for Tuba" - 1997, and Johannes Brahms "Four Serious Songs" - 1896 which were published and presented to him on his last birthday.

James Barnes asked Phillip to consider playing his concerto after hearing him perform on a recital last year at the University of Kansas. The Prinz and Brahms works were selected after hearing performances at the Great Plains & Midwest Tuba Euphonium Regional Conferences where he was also performing Faculty Recitals in May 2013.
