The WSU Choral Department will present its 50th annual Candlelight Christmas Concert Dec. 2-3 in Wiedemann Hall. The concert features the WSU A Cappella Choir, Women s Choir, Concert Chorale and Madrigal Singers. Concerts will be presented at 4 and 7:30 p.m. on Sun. Dec. 2, and at 7:30 p.m. on Monday Dec. 3. The Sunday night performance includes a special invitation to past participants in the Candlelight programs to join the choir in singing the traditional closing "Beautiful Saviour" under the direction of Dr. Harrison œBud Boughton who initiated the Candlelight tradition in 1962.

The program includes students from the WSU brass, string and percussion studios in several selections with the choirs. The Candlelight Concert opens with the traditional Personent Hodie which fills Wiedemann Hall in surround sound in what has become a true holiday tradition. Concert Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Michael Hanawalt, is preparing some exciting choral selections, including "Lo How a Rose" in a rich 12-part contemporary setting, the rocking "Go Where I Send Thee" by Wichita native Andre Thomas, and selections from Handel s "Messiah." The women s choir has prepared a rhythmic setting of "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day," a pop style arrangement of "Auld Lang Syne," and two traditional settings from Britten s "Ceremony of Carols" with harp accompaniment. The Madrigal Singers have programmed some favorites from earlier Candlelight concerts including "O Magnum Mysterium," "Tyrley Tyrlow," and a vocal jazz arrangement of "Angels We have Heard on High."

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of this tradition, the choirs have commissioned three new pieces which will receive their world premiere at this concert. Former WSU choral conductor and current director of the Concordia Choir, Rene Clausen, has written a beautiful setting of " 'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime." Wichita native and music director of East Heights United Methodist Church, Brenda Heard, has composed an original piece titled, "In Bethlehem," " 'Neath Starlit Skies." WSU faculty member Dr. Tom Wine, has composed a contemporary setting of the traditional Latin text, "Hodie Christus Natus Est."

With organ music by professor Lynne Davis and opportunities for audience participation singing traditional carols, it promises to be an exciting commemoration of this 50th year celebrating the Christmas season.
