Sport Management

Students studying Music for Brass, Winds and Percussion have the opportunities to study with teachers who are professional performers, to attend frequent brass, wind and percussion master classes and performances by internationally-known guest artists. Because individual performance skills and experiences in ensemble performance are central to the brass, winds and percussion programs, students may perform with a select wind ensemble, concert band, symphony orchestra, jazz ensembles or basketball bands.

Eight options are available to students who are either looking to improve their playing skills or wanting to learn to teach others how to play: performance, pedagogy, history/literature, theory and composition, accompanying and music education. Emphases in special music education, vocal, keyboard and instrumental music are offered, as well.

Graduates of the Music Theory and Composition program pursue a variety of employment opportunities, including: composition for orchestration or arranging, freelance composition, music copying or computer graphics in music, music publishing and editing, commercial music or music composition for children.

Aging Studies

The program is designed for students with minimal training in aging studies from such areas as public health sciences, communicative disorders, nursing and allied health, social work and mental health. Professionals in any field where older people make up a significant and increasing proportion of the client population, and where professionals with aging studies training are presently scarce, would be well placed in this program.

Audiology

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers courses of study leading to the Doctor of Audiology (AuD). Academic and clinical education is provided for students who wish to become professionally qualified to work as an audiologist in clinical, hospital, academic settings, or in one's own private practice. A graduate program culminating in a professional doctoral degree is required to practice as an audiologist.

Dental Hygiene

As a preventative dental health educator and expert clinician, licensed dental hygienists provide care to clients in a variety of health care settings. The major focus of dental hygiene care emphasizes assessment of patients' needs, development of treatment plans based on individual needs and the delivery of these plans.

Health Science

Typically, health science graduates go on to work in the health care sector as pharmaceutical and hospital sales representatives, specialists in insurance companies, science technicians (or research assistants), and the like. The degree may also be used for those who wish to progress to supervisory or instructional positions requiring a baccalaureate degree (e.g., radiologic technologists, respiratory therapists).

Health Services Management and Community Development

This professional degree program prepares graduates for entry level positions in the management, planning and assessment of health service delivery across the spectrum of health care, such as acute-care medicine, public and community health and long-term care. This major is appropriate for students interested in applying the social and business sciences to a career in the health care arena.

Medical Laboratory Sciences

The medical technologist's role in allied health is the accurate and precise performance of laboratory procedures that aid in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Most medical technology graduates are employed by hospitals, clinics, reference and physician office laboratories.

A degree in nursing prepares graduates for entry-level nursing positions in all health care settings as well as graduate study. Wichita State has contractual agreements with several health care facilities in Wichita and the surrounding area, so students have clinical experience in a variety of settings.

Nursing (RN to BSN)

The School of Nursing at Wichita State University offers advanced placement to registered nurses seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The curriculum is designed so that the RN who has received an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from a nationally accredited program and who meets the work experience criteria may achieve advanced standing in the basic nursing program though retroactive credit.

Physical Therapy

A dynamic profession with an established theoretical and scientific base, physical therapy has widespread clinical applications in the restoration, maintenance and promotion of optimal physical function. As clinicians, physical therapists diagnose and manage movement dysfunction and endurance, physical and functional abilities; restore, maintain and promote not only optimal physical function but also optimal wellness and fitness and optimal quality of life as it relates to movement and health; and prevent the onset, symptoms and progression of impairments, functional limitations and disabilities that may result from diseases, disorders, conditions or injuries.

Physician Assistant

The graduate program in physician assistant studies is the only one of its kind in Kansas. The program prepares students to practice medicine with the supervision of a licensed physician. Physician assistant functions include performing diagnostic, therapeutic, preventative and health maintenance services in any setting where the physician renders care in order to allow more effective and focused application of the physician's particular knowledge and skills.

Forensic Science

Geology

The geology department offers two degrees. The Bachelor of Science provides in-depth training for professional work in industry or government, as well as for graduate study in any field of geoscience or environmental science. The Bachelor of Arts program provides training for students who wish to combine a geology major with teacher preparation, environmental studies, land-use planning, science journalism, environmental law, natural resource management/business or similar majors.
