Multi-university Hunger Dialogue to tackle campus hunger issues
Time is running out to register for the 4th Kansas Hunger Dialogue, which will be held Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Hyatt Regency Wichita.
The event, organized by Kansas Campus Compact, is designed to increase awareness, advocacy and action to combat hunger through the sharing of research, best practices and model programs.
Participating institutions will gather at the dialogue to prepare strategies and action plans to identify campus-based initiatives consistent with the consensus agreements. Wichita State University will assemble a team of faculty, administrators and students to participate in the event. Deborah Ballard-Reisch, professor at WSU’s Elliott School of Communication, is on the planning committee.
The dialogue event was developed in 2011 with the goal to build agreements among colleges and universities statewide to integrate hunger awareness, advocacy and action. What emerged was a consensus that Kansas could and should take steps to create awareness, action and advocacy to eliminate hunger at home and abroad.
Today, Kansas higher education remains committed to engaging college students, faculty, administrators and their neighboring communities to work together to alleviate hunger and think about new approaches to prevent hunger in the future.
This year, the dialogue will place an emphasis on the use of modern technology to engage communities, and it is anticipated that 25 institutions of higher education in Kansas will take part. Keynote speakers include Robert Egger, founder and president of L.A. Kitchen, and Cindy Jones-Nyland, executive vice president of Marketing and Resource Management at Heifer Project International.
The event will kick off with a food-packaging event at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the Birch Room on the second floor promenade level at the Hyatt. Registration is open until Tuesday, Feb. 18. Cost is $75 for professionals from Kansas Campus Compact member campuses, and $80 for others.
Cost for students is $50. Register online or get more information.
