Longtime KMUW 89.1 broadcaster Mark McCain has announced his resignation as general manager effective Dec. 2. He has served as the station's general manager since 1994. KMUW is the public radio station at Wichita State University.

"Due to an urgent family medical concern which will take all my attention in the immediate future, I have decided to retire from WSU and KMUW," said McCain. "I have enjoyed helping the station grow over the nearly 25 years I've been at KMUW, and seeing the steady increase in audience and membership has been rewarding.

"I look forward to seeing KMUW work toward its goal to provide more local news, while helping the university achieve its mission of public service.

"I thank KMUW members, volunteers and business donors for their dedication to the public radio community. I sincerely wish KMUW and WSU a great future. I think the university is on its way to new and exciting horizons under Dr. Bardo and Dr. Vizzini, and I'm confident the station also will reach the higher level of community service we have envisioned," said McCain.

Tony Vizzini, vice president for academic affairs at WSU, is in the process of naming an interim director to lead the station until a permanent director can be found.

McCain first tuned in to public radio in the late 1970s while attending Marymount College in Salina.

He completed a master's degree at the University of Georgia and started working as a classical music announcer and jazz producer at WUGA in 1987. That part-time job grew to a full-time position as announcer and producer.

McCain came to Wichita in 1989, and during his time at KMUW, has served as program assistant, program director and general manager.

He has served on the Kansas Public Broadcasting Council since its inception in 1993 and has served as secretary, treasurer, vice chairman and is currently chairman.
