KMUW FM89, Wichita Public Radio at Wichita State University, ended its fall pledge drive Oct. 9, raising $282,000. The record-breaking community response included 420 new KMUW donors.

"It is gratifying to know that the people of south-central Kansas find our programming useful and valuable in their daily lives," said KMUW general manager Mark McCain. "KMUW lost $30,000 in state funding this past year and federal funding is in jeopardy, so it was necessary to go to our largest funding source—our members—and ask them to cover the loss."

Public radio's funding includes contributions from individuals, businesses, grants, universities and the government.

KMUW is licensed to WSU as a Corporation for Public Broadcasting-qualified, non-commercial and full-service public radio station. It is a charter National Public Radio member, and an affiliate of Public Radio International and American Public Media.

In 1949, KMUW began broadcasting as the first 10-watt, non-commercial FM station in the United States.

KMUW 89.1, Wichita Public Radio, is changing its programming schedule to support its public service mission and to focus production on local news and music.

The station has reformatted its jazz programming and will launch a new jazz show, "Night Train," hosted by full-time KMUW Music Producer Chris Heim.

On Mondays-Thursdays, Heim's world music show, "Global Village," will air from 7-8 p.m. Host Jedd Beaudoin's "Strange Currency" will air from 8-10 p.m. And "Night Train" will air from 10 p.m.-midnight.

On Fridays, KMUW will offer two hours of Heim's blues show, "Crossroads," which will repeat at 7 p.m. Sundays.

In August, KMUW will stop carrying "Living On Earth" on weekend mornings and "Afropop" on Saturday nights in order to offer two additional hours of the "BBC World Service" each week. These changes will save the station funding that can then be used to provide more in-depth coverage of local news and other locally produced extras.

Among its local additions, the station added Wichita writer Andrew Bales' pop culture musings, "Into It," to its reserve of "Morning Edition" biweekly commentaries in March.

KMUW will soon add a music spot from Mark Foley, assistant professor at Wichita State University and principal bassist of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, to the same slate.

In the late 1960s, Wichita was racially segregated, but that didn't stop the Smart Brothers Band from attracting mixed-race audiences at Smart's Palace. Nearly every night the Smart Brothers Band, including Leroy, Vernon, John and Richard, packed the house at the family's club at 1009 E. 9th St.

Carla Eckels received a second-place award in the spot news category for her reporting on the Scott Roeder sentencing. Roeder received the Hard 50 in April for murdering Wichita abortion provider George Tiller.

KMUW also received a second-place award for its station website. The award was shared by Chandra Stauffer and Kerri Wood Thompson.

Both stories are available now at kmuw.org.

Wichita Radio Reading Service will hold its 9th Annual Mini Golf Masters Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 25.

This year Mini Golf Masters players will don their creative and often elaborate costumes a month earlier than in past years as they head to the putt-putt course to show their support for people in the Wichita community living with visual impairments.

Wichita Radio Reading Service, a public service of KMUW, will hold its 9th Annual Mini Golf Masters Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 25. Tee time is set for 10 a.m. at All Star Adventures, 1010 N. Webb Road.

The Mini Golf Masters is unique from other golf tournaments in that players of all ages and skill sets are encouraged to tap in to their inner golf personalities, as opposed to putting too heavy of an emphasis on displaying their skills as a golfer.

The Mini Golf Masters brings companies, families and friends together for a highly entertaining event.

Sierra Scott will serve as emcee for the tournament.

Registration for a team of four is $100. Participants will compete for a chance to win individual and team prizes. A team will be selected as the best dressed, so participants are encouraged to be creative in their costume choice and team name.

To register, go to www.kmuw.org and select the WRRS tab.

Deadline for team registrations is Friday, Sept. 3. Registrations made after are first come first served.

The story of Wichitan Paul Wilson and how he met the person who changed his life while riding the elevator at the Lassen Hotel will air across the United States on National Public Radio Friday, Dec. 25.

The story of Wichitan Paul Wilson and how he met the person who changed his life while riding the elevator at the Lassen Hotel will air across the United States on National Public Radio Friday, Dec. 25.

His daughter, Marty Smith, interviewed Wilson in the StoryCorps Booth during its visit to Wichita this fall. KMUW 89.1 Wichita Public Radio brought StoryCorps to Wichita is celebration of its 60th anniversary.

StoryCorps, an initiative of NPR and the Library of Congress, was in Wichita Oct. 19-Nov. 14 to record the stories of the people of south central Kansas.

More than 110 interviews took place, each between people who wished to have their individual story preserved for themselves and for future generations.

As part of the largest oral history project in the country, StoryCorps brings soundproof recording booths to the nation's communities. Community members can accompany relatives – or other loved ones – to conduct broadcast-quality oral history interviews with the guidance of a trained facilitator.

At the end of each 40-minute session, participants receive a CD of the interview. A second copy becomes part of an archive housed at the Library of Congress.

Placement in the library will make it possible for future generations of participants to listen to high-quality recordings of their ancestors' voices and stories.

It will also serve as a valuable resource to historians, presenting a history of life as it was lived in the early years of the 21st century.

Selected interviews are broadcast nationally on Fridays on KMUW's Morning Edition. As the local stories are produced by KMUW staff and aired locally, they are made available online at kmuw.org. National interviews are also accessible at www.storycorps.net.

KMUW is licensed to Wichita State University and is a charter member of National Public Radio.
