Industrial, Systems, and Manufacturing Engineering Department
The Industrial, Systems, and Manufacturing Engineering (ISME) department at WSU offers two undergraduate degree programs, one in industrial engineering (BSIE) and another in manufacturing engineering (BSMfgE). Both the degree programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET).

What Is Industrial Engineering?
Industrial engineers apply scientific knowledge to solve problems in manufacturing and other industries, businesses, and institutions, focusing on productivity improvement through better use of human resources, financial resources, natural resources and manmade structures and equipment. IEs apply a full range of analytical, simulation, and experimentation tools that are applied to problems in designing, planning, implementing, and operating systems. These problems are found in a wide variety of service organizations (such as, banks, hospitals, social service and governmental agencies), project-based firms (such as, construction and consulting), and product-based firms (such as, processing, manufacturing, and electronics). The focus of industrial engineering is systems integration and improvement.

What Is Manufacturing Engineering?
Manufacturing Engineering is concerned with converting raw materials and intermediate products into final and other intermediate products through the use of various design, processing, assembly, and automation techniques as well as the design and manufacturing of tools, jigs, and machines used in these processes. The strength of the BSMfgE program at Wichita State is its emphasis on the following three manufacturing engineering areas: materials and processes; product engineering and assembly; and, manufacturing quality and productivity. Manufacturing engineers can apply their broad and comprehensive skills in a wide spectrum of industries.

The Undergraduate Degree Programs
The two BS programs, in Manufacturing Engineering and in Industrial Engineering, require the completion of 128 semester hours, minus hours commensurate with advanced placement. Students may select technical electives to emphasize their study of advanced concepts and topics. Selection of appropriate technical elective courses allows the students to tailor their study to fit their individual interests and needs. Students' programs of study are determined in consultation with their faculty advisors.

Student Activities
Students participate in a number of national, honorary, and collegiate organizations related to engineering, such as the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, ASQ, Institute for Industrial Engineers, Alpha Pi Mu, Society of Women Engineers, Engineering
Council and APICS.

Activities include trips to national conventions, contests, plant trips, picnics, and workshops. Recent student tours includedAmazon.com in SE KS to examine their inventory control practices and Coleman propane, all students are able to view manufacturing of all types from aerospace to retail distribution, to fluorescent lightbulb mfg to cattle rendering plants. Students have traveled to Orlando and Chicago for conferences this year.

Facilities and Laboratories
The Department boasts several state-of-the-art instructional laboratories:
Engineering Graphics lab is used for teaching courses and has software such as, Pro-E and Arena (Simulation Package).
Cessna Manufacturing Processes Lab contains traditional and non-traditional machines that are used to teach milling, drilling, welding, forming, electro-discharge machining etc.
Ergonomics lab has a wide array of modern measurement systems used for ergonomic analysis. This facility is used to teach fundamentals of ergonomics and their applications.
The Computer-Integrated Manufacturing Lab houses CNC and NC machines.
The Industrial Automation Lab is used for teaching courses in Process Automation and Web-Based Integration.
RAPID Prototyping Lab.
The Collaborative Robotics Lab is used for research and training in industrial robotics and automation.
