The Victor Murdock Scholarship

One Victor Murdock scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman student each year with a journalism emphasis who, in the opinion of the selection committee, exhibits particular interest in and the potential for success in journalism.

Applicants must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0. Murdock scholarships are a four year award, and the total amount available to each student is $5,000 over four years of enrollment. Awards will be made without regard to financial need.

The Murdock scholarship application and accompanying materials are due at the main office, 102 Elliott Hall, before noon Friday, Feb. 1, 2013.

Along with your application please include:

  • Resume (please be specific about relevant communication experience, including internships)
  • A letter or essay of intent (no more than 250 words and one page long) about your experience and ambitions in journalism
  • Two letters of recommendation. One should be from your high school media advisor (or closest equivalent) but may also be from employers at local newspapers/media organizations, counselors or other teachers (listed in order of preference)
  • Three to five samples of your media work (print, broadcast or online) in at least 2 formats

Victor Murdock was born in Burlingame, Kansas, in 1871 and was the publisher and managing editor of The Wichita Eagle from 1894-1903. Following his political career as a five-term U.S. Representative, he returned as editor and publisher of the Wichita Eagle until his death in 1945. The fund was established by his grandson, Captain Victor Delano (U.S. Navy, retired).
