Undergraduate Studies in Psychology
General Degree Requirements
Psychology majors take four required courses (General, Statistics, Research Methods, and Systems & Theories) plus two electives from each of the basic, social/cultural, and applied areas. Our program's faculty strive to integrate undergraduate majors into the research life of the department by providing opportunities for involvement as active and contributing members of the research programs being conducted by the faculty and their doctoral students
General Education/Liberal Arts & Sciences (Note: Courses taken at WSU must observe the General Education Program requirements regarding Introduction to the Discipline, Further Study, and Issues and Perspective courses. Relevant transfer credits are accepted and fit in where most reasonable.
Communications: English 100 or 101 and 102 with a C or better, 3 hrs oral communication (COMM 111).
Mathematics: Students must demonstrate proficiency by passing Math 111, 112 or 211 or by exam.
Fine Arts Appreciation: At least 3 hrs in art, dance, music or theatre appreciation.
Humanities: At least 9 hrs and 2 departments. One literature course is required which can count as 3 hrs and 1 department towards the “9 and 2” above. All students must have either History 131 or 132 or Political Science 121. History 131 or 132 (but not Pol. Sci. 121) will count as part of the “9 hrs and 2 departments” in the Humanities.
Social and Behavioral Sciences: At least 9 hrs and 2 departments outside of Psychology. All students must have either History 131 or 132 or Political Science 121. Pol. Sci. 121 (but not History 131 or 132) will count as part of the “9 hrs and 2 departments” in the Social Sciences .
Natural Science: 12 hours (4 in a lab science) at least one Physical and one Biological Science. Students with 2 units of high school lab science (excluding general science) need 9 hours
Foreign Languages: a) successfully complete 111 and 112 plus five additional hours in one foreign language or 111 and 112 in two foreign languages, or b) other foreign language experience, or high school foreign language experience, or high school foreign language study at the rate of one high school unit for each college semester may apply toward the degree. You must show proficiency at appropriate level even with high school credit.
Upper Division: At least 45 hours in courses numbered 300 or above.
Residence: At least 30 hrs of course credit at W.S.U. At least 24 of the last 30 or 50 of the last 60 at W.S.U. 60 hours must be from a four year institution.
D grades and minimum GPA requirement: No students are allowed credit toward graduation for D's in excess of one quarter of the total hours. Students must have an overall GPA of 2.0 or greater to graduate.
Application for Graduation: An application for graduation must be filed with the Liberal Arts Office the semester before you plan to graduate.
Senior Forms: A senior form signed by the chair of the Psychology Department and the chair of the department in which you have a minor (if you have one) must be filed with the Liberal Arts Office two semesters prior to graduation.
Psychology Minor Requirements: Any 15 hours of Psychology constitute a minor in Psychology.
