She first worked at Mainstreet Studio before freelancing in Minneapolis and later in Indianapolis, IN. Johnson received her MFA in Graphic Design from Indiana University and has enjoyed teaching book design, illustration and design courses at WSU since 1984.

Johnson’s latest private press incarnation, Curly Girl Press, has to date, produced 18+ titles utilizing both letterpress and Creative Suite. She designs, writes, illustrates, prints, and binds the books by hand. One of her fine art letterpress books was juried into AIGA’s 50 books in 1992, competing internationally against prominent publishers. Of these books, 83 are in public and private collections in 25 states and three countries, including the St. Bride Printing Library, London, UK and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the graphic arts division.
