Histories of the men and women behind WSU's endowed funds

Shirley J. Dieker Scholarship

Shirley Clegg Dieker grew up in Wichita, graduated from Wichita East high school and attended Wichita State University. She graduated with an associate's degree and a bachelor's degree in business education, with a minor in Spanish. Shirley's first experience with Greek life was as a Little Sister to the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon, where she met many friends who would become her sisters in Alpha Phi. Though she lived in the Alpha Phi house only a short time, the friendships made there have lasted a lifetime.

Upon graduation, Shirley accepted a job with Farm Credit Bank. As computers became common in the workplace, she began a long career in Information Technology. In 1983, she married Denis Dieker. They have two children, Joseph and Margaret. Engagement has always been important to Shirley. She remained active in the Wichita alumnae chapter of Alpha Phi and the Gamma Xi House Corporation Board. She also has been active in Girl Scouting and her church. Her advice to WSU students is to get involved in areas that interest them most, whether it be Greek life, student government, band or other campus organizations. Shirley endowed this scholarship to assist Alpha Phi members with their education and encourage them to live in the house and be active in the sorority and the university.
