John W. Duren Football '70 Endowed Scholarship

One of the worst tragedies of college sports history happened on Friday, Oct. 2, 1970. A plane carrying WSU football players, athletic staff members and team boosters crashed at approximately 3 p.m. on a mountain near Silver Plume, Colo., while en route to Logan, Utah, for a game with Utah State University. Thirty-one people were killed.

Mr. John W. Duren was one of the 14 players who perished in the crash. He graduated from John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City, Okla. He wore number 84 and was 19 years old. There is a memorial placed at the crash site that reads, “As time goes by, memories fade. But we will never forget..."

The John W. Duren Football '70 Endowed Scholarship was created in his honor.
