Shelby Augur Photo Tutor Shelby Augur

Tutor

Shelby received her associate of science degree from Fort Scott Community College. She was on the honor roll and served as president’s ambassador from 2014-2016. Her best friend, who was employed with one of the new TRIO programs on campus, told Shelby about TRIO Talent Search. Now, Shelby tutors math, science, and reading for TRIO Talent Search at Wichita State University. Shelby is currently a junior, working towards a bachelor of science in nursing with a minor in psychology, planning to graduate in May 2019. After college, Shelby wants to work as a traveling nurse, stamping as many countries as possible on her passport while helping as many people as she can. Shelby advises students to take advantage of the many academic and leadership opportunities as possible and complete scholarship applications as often as they can.

Tutor

Bryana is a freshman and member of Alpha Phi Sorority, majoring in social work. She first heard about TRIO in middle school during the monthly presentations a TRIO representative would give her AVID class. Bryana recently joined the TRIO Talent Search staff as a tutor for math, science, social studies, and language arts. Her target graduation date is May 2021. After college, she will seek employment as a high school social worker. Her advice to students is to give 100 percent to everything they do.

Tutor

Mary learned about TRIO through Talent Search Middle School Director Stephanie Haynes who visited Mary’s middle school every Friday. Mary persisted as a TRIO participant from 8th - 12th grade. Now, she is a Talent Search tutor and sophomore at WSU, majoring in elementary education with an emphasis in special needs education. She is also an active member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Her target graduation date is May 2021. After college, she plans to teach either on the east or west coast, preferably in her dream location of Seattle, Washington. Mary advises students to never set limitations on themselves. They can achieve any goal they set as long as they are willing to work for it.

Tutor

Casey is a WSU freshman and Hispanic Scholar, majoring in mechanical engineering. He is also an active participant in BAJA SAE, an intercollegiate design competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Casey first heard about TRIO Talent Search in middle school and later applied to join the Talent Search tutorial staff during a job fair at Wichita State. He currently tutors mathematics at Jardine and plans to complete his undergraduate degree in May 2021 then pursue his master’s degree. After college, he will pursue an occupation at a local company in order to build credibility and knowledge in the engineering field. His advice to other students is to be organized, take risks, and succeed beyond expectations.

Tutor

Halla first heard about the TRIO Talent Search program when she was entering middle school. She participated in the program throughout her middle school years. She is currently a junior at WSU majoring in Exercise Science and plans to graduate in 2019. She will then apply for the Physician Assistant program at WSU. After college she plans to move out of Kansas, become a Physician Assistant, and travel the world before starting a family and adopting several animals. Halla is fluent in all subjects but primarily tutors math and science. Her advice to students: “Stay in school. College is a big influence on a student’s life. Try everything once. College is going to open a lot of opportunities so give them all a chance.”

Stephna is an international student at WSU, a graduate student in engineering management with an undergrad in aerospace engineering. She is also an active member of the American Society for Quality(ASQ) Engineers. Stephna heard about TRIO from several of her friends who were previously enrolled in TRIO programs. Now, Stephna tutors math and science for TRIO Talent Search. Her target graduation date is December 2018. After college, she plans to become an aerospace industrial engineer and travel to as many destinations as possible. Her goal is to help lead and influence people, especially women, to pursue their dreams without fear. She advises students to “explore every opportunity college has to offer, enjoy whatever they do, and excel in everything.”
