Bender of Twigs Banner Richard Muma

Richard Muma

Office of the President

Rick’s lifelong relationship with Wichita State University has left an indelible mark on his leadership and dedication to this institution. He has witnessed the university evolve from a municipal university to the vibrant, student-centered, research-focused campus it is today. Notably, during his first year as President of Wichita State University, the institution experienced record enrollments not seen in over 30 years—a reflection of his impactful leadership.

Much of the transformation that WSU has undergone can be attributed to Rick’s contributions in various senior leadership roles. While he often shares stories of visiting the WSU campus as a child, his formal professional journey with the university began in 1994 when he became the Department Chair for the Physician Assistant program, a position he held until 1999. After a brief time away serving in the Physician Assistant program at St. Louis University, Rick returned and steadily rose through the ranks at WSU. His leadership positions have included Vice President for Academic Affairs, Senior Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Strategic Enrollment Management, Executive Vice President and Provost, and now, President.

When the Kansas Board of Regents announced Rick’s appointment as President in May, the announcement was met with enthusiasm and celebration from across the WSU community. This overwhelming support was due to the relationships Rick has built with students, faculty, and staff over the years. Many across campus—through their comments and reflections—have emphasized his genuine care, dedication, and respect for the people he serves alongside.

As a first-generation college graduate, Rick brings a personal understanding of the challenges many WSU students face. His empathy and advocacy for student success have been at the heart of his leadership approach. Colleagues have noted how Rick's healthcare background often shines through in his administrative roles—he approaches challenges diagnostically, listening attentively, identifying root causes, assessing best practices, prescribing solutions, and implementing thoughtful plans for improvement.

On behalf of the many individuals whose lives he has impacted throughout his remarkable journey, it is with deep appreciation that we congratulate Rick on being inducted into the Bender of Twigs. His vision, humility, and relentless dedication continue to shape the future of Wichita State University in meaningful ways.
