David Muehl

Performance Facilities Audio Producer

College of Fine Arts

I have known David Muehl for the better part of four decades, ever since we worked together as students in the old Theater Services. He has a lot of firsts to claim, first in his family to go to college; but there are also some lasts, he was the last drum major for the football marching band.

One of the things that he won’t really talk about is an award that sits on the windowsill in his office, an award from Student Government Association for Student Engagement and Advocacy. He had to be tricked into going to the award ceremony. I received an email from SGA asking for my help to make sure he was there, I told him we had a meeting in the RSC, we walked over and I told him as I left him there to be gracious and say thank you. He doesn’t talk about this award, but it’s still on the windowsill.

His reluctance to go to a simple award ceremony is a sign, we work in the shadows, not in front of people. If we’re noticed we’ve usually done something wrong. You’ve all heard his work, not seen, but heard. At WSU commencements, countless events on campus, musicals both at Wichita State University and Music Theatre Wichita, he is one of the finest sound designers/technicians in Wichita. We are lucky to have him, and I am lucky to say he is my friend.
