Transition Mentor 

The Office of First-Year Programs is seeking outstanding individuals to serve as Transition Mentors (TMs). Students in these positions play a key role in the retention and completion efforts of the university by assisting with the transition of new students to Wichita State University. Transition Mentors will have the opportunity to build relationships, interact with university staff and work with a team of peers during these unique leadership experiences. Individuals selected as TMs serve as mentors and role models and are responsible for making new students' transition during their first semester successful.

Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications                 

Current enrollment in at least 12 credit hours

  • Completion of at least 12 credit hours at Wichita State University
  • Experience with a wide-range of campus, community and life experiences
  • A positive attitude about Wichita State University
  • Academic and judicial good standing with the university
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Ability to serve as a role model for good student behavior
  • Ability to provide guidance, support and motivation for others
  • Perform in an ethical and professional manner
  • Must have an interest in helping students transition to college and Wichita State University
  • Ability to attend and successfully complete training and commitments outlined below - as related to the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Sophomore through senior standing (in fall semester of 2019)
  • 2.75 GPA or higher
Time Commitment

Transition Mentor Commitments

Training is a co-op class during the spring semester. Weekly meetings with dates and times are determined based on student staff class schedules. Training is required of all new and returning Transition Mentors. No exceptions will be granted. There will be some overnight trips planned during the spring training attendance, and trip attendance is mandatory.

Orientation Programs
Reserve all day (7 a.m. - 5 p.m.) for these program days. You will be notified if, or when, adjustments are made to the schedule. Guest programs are scheduled on day one of a two-day program.

Application Process


Submit your completed application packet online. Hard copies of the application are available in the Transitions and Orientation office located in Hubbard Hall 115. Applications need to completed and turned in no later than October 31st by 5pm.

  1. Complete the data form and submit essays.

  2. Provide a resume. Email your resume to We encourage you to visit Career Services for information on developing a resume if you need assistance.

  3. Provide two references. These may be from your academic advisor, faculty members, community leaders or others. Family members will not be considered. Please include these names on your resume.

Selection Process

  1. All applications, references and qualifications (GPA / Judicial Standing) will be reviewed by the Assistant Director of First-Year Programs.
  2. When you submit your application packet (due Oct. 31 by 5pm), you will be contacted by the office to sign up for a 20-minute, individual interview during the first two weeks of November.
  3. All applicants will be notified of decisions the week of November 19th.
  4. The first meeting will be December 7th as a meet-and-greet with the senior Transition Mentors and staff
