SGA Announces Legislative Action to Ensure Compliance with State Budget Proviso

WICHITA, Kan. — The Student Government Association (SGA) will present legislation at Wednesday’s Student Senate meeting to bring its governing documents and organizational structures into compliance with the state budget proviso restricting university involvement in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) related programming. The proviso took effect July 1, 2025, and is expected to be renewed next fiscal year.

This action follows a complaint against Kansas State University’s SGA for funding DEI related processes was sustained by the State Legislature. Under new interpretation, SGAs are considered quasigovernmental entities due to their role in allocating student fees and must therefore comply fully with the proviso.

Legal review identified three areas of Wichita State University’s SGA Bylaws that conflict with the proviso:

The Diversity, Empowerment, and Inclusion Committee
Certain scholarship language
The Agency structure

The SGA Joint Leadership Council and all Agency Presidents were briefed on these changes.

Related legislation will appear in the Legislative Packet released this week and will be heard by the Student Senate at Wednesday’s meeting.
