Moving Forward: New Legislation, TRIO Support, and Exciting Campus Events

President Wang attended the Heritage Gala at the CAC Theatre and met with David Miller to discuss student fees. She also met with Dean Mai to discuss SGA Connect, the WSU Foundation, and library-related concerns.

Vice President Nguyen finalized the Freshman Leadership Council (FLC) modules and met with a candidate for the Director of Transfer Student Experiences position.

She also held meetings with the WSU Foundation, Alumni Engagement, and Dean Mai to discuss ongoing student initiatives. Additionally, she is now serving on the Swipe Out Hunger Board to help address food insecurity on campus.

Treasurer Bumm has continued to review and approve Individual and Organizational Funding requests through the Finance Commission. Student organizations have been contacted regarding their Appropriations allocations and how to access them. Please note that all funding processes are first-come, first-served, so be sure to submit your application early.

Chief Fritz has been working to ensure that all documents and bills are filed properly within the Executive branch. Moving forward, she will be expanding her role to oversee more daily activities of Cabinet members to ensure accountability and intentionality.

Director Arens is developing community garden legislation in collaboration with Speaker Phan. She is also meeting with John Lee, updating the legislation tracker, and preparing for Senate meetings, which include new senator onboarding and advocacy for TRIO programs.

Director Xiong is managing communications for Cider & Connections, Pumpkins & Leadership, and Boba & Ballots events. She is also handling media coverage for InterFEST, coordinating headshots and introductions for Cabinet members, and preparing the next SGA Newsletter.

Director Raju is finalizing tables and times for Social Safety Week. She also provided updates on the ADHD, Autism, and Learning Disability Testing Fund, confirming that all appointments are filled for the year.

Director Khan is catching up after exams and continuing email communication with RSOs. He is planning upcoming training sessions on Canva and event management, while coordinating with the Media and Marketing teams to support student organizations.

Director Safdar is preparing for InterFEST, with the venue confirmed and marketing in progress. He is also managing outreach to international RSOs and WSU leadership, addressing airport pickup challenges, and collaborating with the Student Collaboration Association (SCA) and Alumni Engagement on career and alumni panels.

Director Murphy announced the upcoming SGA Pregame Tailgate on November 4th. He is working to secure the Shocker Sound Machine for the event and will meet with Housing & Residence Life (HRL) to finalize the dining plan.

Director Olalde-Taylor confirmed the Teaching Kitchen partnership with WSU Dining for November 5th and scheduled the next SGA Community Garden Showcase for November 6th. Volunteer recruitment for these events will begin soon.

Director Guthrie is organizing outreach and speaker invitations for the upcoming Soft Skills Event later this semester.

Undergraduate Student Advocate Island currently has seven active cases, addressing academic, financial, harassment, and parking concerns. He has confirmed a hearing date and is coordinating the next Academic Data & Policy Task Force (ADPTF) meeting.

SB-68-117: This Act formally added agencies under each Senate standing committee and made some edits to accurately update the language of the SGA Bylaws. It had its first read on October 1st, and it was approved by the Government Oversight Committee with a recommendation to pass.

AR-68-002: This Resolution encourages the University to support TRIO programs and provide improved communications with students about TRIO programs. TRIO, which is funded by the federal government, is facing significant budget cuts. This Resolution comes as a response to the funding cuts, and it requests that WSU protect this program. The first reading of the Resolution was October 8th, and it will go through the Diversity, Empowerment, and Inclusion Committee.

SB-68-118: This Act appoints senators elected in the Fall Election to their Senate Committees.

Senator Tiffany Sowa and Senator Anestacia Marston are appointed to the Academic Affairs Committee.

Senator Vincent Farwell, Senator Adán Parker, and Senator Arianna Martinez are appointed to the Diversity, Empowerment, and Inclusion Committee.

Senator Alex Le, Senator Aidan Thibodeau, and Senator Mason Fouquet are appointed to the Government Oversight Committee.

Senator Eiden Hinojosa, Senator Corwin Spatharos, Senator Trinity McCarroll, and Senator Erin Tims are appointed to the Student Services Committee.

This Act was added to the Consent Agenda by the Senate and was adopted as such.

SB-68-115: This Act amends the bylaws of the Menstrual Product Advisory Board to remove outdated language. When the Board was created, it included two seats for representatives from the FOCUS recognized student organization. This group is no longer a recognized student organization or active within the WSU campus. This Act was passed by Senate.

The Government Oversight Committee remains committed to reviewing, updating, and clarifying the policies that guide our student government—ensuring structure, compliance, and support for all members of SGA. Over the past two weeks, Chairperson Tiwana, alongside Chairperson Hansen, has been reviewing the bylaws of the Graduate Student Council. The final review will be completed after meeting with the GSC President later this week. The committee also approved Senate Bill SB-68-115: Amendments to the Menstrual Product Advisory Board and is finalizing the draft for the proposed Freshman Senator Amendment, which aims to clarify eligibility for students in their first year at WSU, regardless of transfer credits.

Looking ahead, the committee will continue supporting campus engagement initiatives. The Shockers Vote Coalition will host its Election Day event on November 4, and the committee plans to assist with this effort. Additionally, Chairperson Tiwana and Chairperson Peng will attend the International Student Union (ISU) elections on October 11 to ensure that all bylaws and election procedures are properly followed.

These past few weeks, Chairperson Hansen have reviewed the Dining Services webpages and gone through the Parking Services policies and bylaws. Senator Miller also introduced the “Association Resolution to Encourage the University to Stand with the TRIO Programs” on October 8th. In addition, Chairperson Hansen initiated monthly one-on-ones with all of her committee members and began scheduling meetings with the new GSC president and the FGSO president to build rapport.

With the ISU elections postponed, Chairperson Peng will be looking more closely onto their bylaws and constitutions but other than that, she has been attending the agencies cabinet meetings on a bi-weekly basis to ensure that our agencies continually updated.

Chairperson Kasirosafar is working closely with the Academic Affairs Committee on several major initiatives this semester. The committee is currently developing legislation to add an A+ grade option to the university’s grading scale. Members are reviewing past resolutions, petitions, and Faculty Senate feedback to guide this process, while each senator contributes by drafting the resolution, compiling prior research, and planning student outreach to ensure student voices are represented.
