Vision and Voice: SGA's State of the Student Body

President Wang has been working hard to plan the initiatives stated in her State of the Student Body address. Some of these initiatives include creating a Student Legal Services Program as well as a new Director of Transfer Students Experiences.

Additionally, President Wang attended a retreat with the Student Body Presidents of other Kansas universities to discuss goals and initiatives pertinent to all of higher education. She also went to meet with the Kansas Board of Regents this past Wednesday and Thursday to engage in conversations with the Regents regarding student concerns.

Vice President Nguyen has been working on finalizing Finance Commission Interviews for the rest of the academic year. She will also be taking on the responsibilities for Freshman Leadership Council. In addition, she is working to appoint individuals  on the Health Committee, Outreach Committee, and Student Organizations Council.

Student Body Treasurer Bumm has sent information to student organizations regarding their Appropriations allocations and how to access them. Additionally, Individual and Organizational Funding continues to be open as Finance Commission works through them. These processes are first come, first served, so please make sure to apply early!

Chief Fritz has been working on ensuring that all documents and bills are filed within the Senate and the Executive Branch. In addition, she has finished meeting minutes from the Appropriations process.

She will be expanding her role to oversee more of the daily activities of Cabinet members, to ensure accountability and intentionality.

Director Arens has continued to facilitate communication and collaboration between the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch. She has been working closely with Speaker Phan to create policies surrounding the Community Garden. She has continued her project of tracking local, regional, state, and national legislation to ensure that SGA and the students are fully informed of potential changes that may impact them.

Director Arens also participated in outreach initiatives throughout the past few weeks, including attending and presenting at Agency meetings, SGA Week, and tabling initiatives.

Director Xiong is continuing to collaborate with members between the three branches to push out graphics in various areas as well as continuing on with the newsletter. She has also been in attendance at multiple events to capture SGA’s involvements and outreach. 

She is planning on updating more of the social media and presentations to ensure a more uniform branding look.

Director Gracia-Alvarez launched a successful SGA Week! He is now busy planning and preparing for the next upcoming events. Stay tuned for more!

Director Raju has continued to refill the Menstrual Products throughout the campus. She is preparing for SGA Wellness Week! Stay tuned for more information.

Director Khan is working on compiling a document of all RSOs on campus to begin outreach. Additionally, he is collaborating with multiple other Directors to plan other outreach initiatives specific to their role.

President Wang and Vice President Nguyen are no longer searching for a Director for this position. They will instead be delegating the tasks of this role between Vice President Nguyen and Chief of Staff Fritz.

Director Safdar is working on transitioning into his role. In the meantime, he is following up on conversations with International Student Union as well as the International Education Office.

Director Murphy is working with the Athletics Marketing Team to find a way to make games more accessible to students in order to increase attendance. The schedule for all sports are available at goshockers.com. Students at WSU are able to get free tickets throughout locations on campus. The information for where to grab the tickets are also available at goshockers.com.

Additionally, Director Murphy is planning on hosting an event to start off the Men’s Basketball season on November 4^th. Please stay tuned for more information!

Director Olalde-Taylor is working on sustainability initiatives throughout campus. She is planning to reach out to different departments throughout campus to discuss how they can be more sustainable. Additionally, she has been taking care of the Community Garden in order to help supplement the produce within the Shocker Support Locker.

Director Guthrie has finished his presentations to students in all housing complexes! He is working on implementing a soft skills workshop open to anyone in collaboration with the Shocker Career Accelerator!

Advocate Island has been overseeing 7 active cases. In addition, they have conducted the first meeting of the Accessibility and Disability Pride Task Force with much success!

SB-68-108: This Act would make amendments to the Freshman Leadership Council within SGA Bylaws and was presented before the Senate for its first read. It was referred to the Government Oversight Committee for Senate Committee review.

On September 10, 2025, Speaker Phan, along with each Head of Branch of the Association, delivered an Address for the State of the Student Body.

The Government Oversight Committee remains committed to reviewing, updating, and clarifying the policies that guide our student government—ensuring structure, compliance, and support for all members of SGA. Over the past two weeks, Chairperson Tiwana, along with other SGA leadership, have reviewed SGA agency bylaws to ensure they are updated and compliant. The Government Oversight Committee is also working on updating the SGA bylaws to make them more transparent, effective, and student friendly.

Looking ahead, the Government Oversight Committee is exploring collaboration with the Shockers Vote Coalition to improve student voter turnout, increase awareness about the importance of civic engagement, and encourage broader participation in Senate elections. These efforts aim to strengthen student representation and foster a more engaged campus community.

Chairperson Hansen attended the first Accessibility and Disability Pride Taskforce meeting for the semester. She has scheduled 1:1s with all her senators within her committee and with the Graduate Student Council. The Student Services Committee is brainstorming and writing legislation for various initiatives.

The Diversity, Empowerment, and Inclusion Committee meets in Lancelot Room, RSC 203.

Chairperson Peng is in the process of reviewing the agency bylaws, and once that’s completed, Speaker Phan, Chairperson Tiwana, Director Arens, and Chairperson Peng will meet to finalize recommendations before presenting them to the agencies.

For agency updates: ASC had a successful first general meeting last Wednesday, but Chairperson Peng attended their cabinet meeting Sunday. HALO also had a great turnout at their bracelet-making night and hosted a Spanish trivia event with a Kahoot game with prizes. SPECTRUM held a karaoke night last Thursday and invited SGA to their upcoming meeting. BSU packed their welcome week with daily events like Grill & Groove and Mix & Mingle, although their pool party was canceled due to weather.

Chairperson Kasirosafar is continuing her work on the plus or minus grading policy and monitoring proposals to move textbook sales to an external provider, reflecting a national shift toward digital resources. Chairperson Kasirosafar is also planning introductory meetings with members of the Wichita State Academic Affairs Cabinet to build collaboration, improve communication, and ensure initiatives align with the university’s broader academic priorities. These efforts aim to make sure student voices are heard and considered in shaping academic policies.
