Wichita State recognized for its increased safety efforts

The Wichita State University Police Department has been named as one of the Top 25 programs in the country for its focus on safety.

The list, compiled by Safe Campus, places WSU at No. 16 in the nation. The award is open to any administrative department from a U.S. college or university that has improved campus safety.

Making this Top 25 list is a recognition that WSU has excelled in making campus a more secure place for students, employees and visitors.

Criteria for the award include submission information provided from the university, Clery Reports, program initiatives and news articles to determine the Top 25 List. All 4,298 U.S. accredited higher-education institutions were eligible.

WSU was selected for its emphasis on community policing, specifically the Caring and Compassionate policing program, and its fiscal, training and staffing investment in safety technology.

“This recognition honors not only the police officers and support staff of the Wichita State University Police Department, but also all members of the University CARE team, the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, the Student Government Association and the entire campus community,” says WSU Police Chief Rodney Clark. “The community makes a place safer all working together. We are honored to be counted among other nationally recognized schools on this list.”
