CEDBR to release a revised leading and current index for Wichita

Media are invited to the first release of the new index numbers at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, in a webinar conference call with local media and the Wichita Area Outlook Team. At that time, Jeremy Hill, director of Wichita State's Center for Economic Development and Business Research, will present the most recent index values and discuss what those values reveal about the local economy. Access information to the webinar is below, and registration is not required.

As the economy shifts over time, it's important to periodically evaluate tools used to measure the economy and make necessary revisions to those tools so they will more accurately reflect a geographic area's current situation and trends, as well as provide meaningful information that can be used for strategic planning by government and businesses. Consequently, the CEDBR, with significant guidance from Terence Decker, WSU Barton School senior lecturer, has evaluated the WSU Leading Economic Indicator Index and the WSU Current Conditions Index. That evaluation process has led to revisions in WSU's indices, which will improve the effectiveness of those tools.

The new WSU Current Conditions Index consists of Wichita's total nonfarm employment number and unemployment rate, as well as Wichita's average weekly hours and average weekly earnings of production employees in the manufacturing industry.

The WSU Leading Economic Index consists of the national Aircraft and Parts Industrial Production and Total Industrial Production Indices, as well as the Kansas Leading Index and the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development Composite Leading Indicators (an international index).
