* WSU will host the Distinguished Scholarship Invitational, one of the largest and most prestigious scholarship competitions in Kansas on Saturday, Nov. 16. Faculty and staff are invited to serve as observers by watching students participate in small group activities and rating them on their leadership skills. The approximate time commitment is 7:30 a.m.-noon. A light breakfast and brief training session is included. * The WSU volleyball team will host the Italian National Team at 7 p.m. today (Monday, Sept. 30) in Charles Koch Arena. For tickets, call 978-FANS (3267).

* The Rie Bloomfield Organ Series presents Martin Jean at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Wiedemann Hall. Jean has performed throughout the United States and Europe, and is known for his broad reportorial interests. For tickets, call 978-3233 or go to http://www.wichita.edu/fineartsboxoffice.

* All WSU classified employees are encouraged to complete a survey by Monday, Oct. 14, from the Alternative Service committee regarding the potential move to University Support Staff (USS) or to continue as State Civil Service employees. Respondents are providing the committee with important data that addresses any questions or concerns on the USS process. A PDF form of the survey is available online at http://wichita.edu/asc for those who would like to type their answers.

* The Office for Faculty Development and Student Success is offering Scientific Teaching from 12:30-1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in 211 Neff Hall. Scientific Teaching applies the practices and values of science to teaching scientific content, but these strategies can be used in any classroom. This is an offering in the Institute on High Impact Practices, which is open to all instructors on campus. Register by contacting ofdss@wichita.edu or 978-3209.

* WSU's Service Week, Oct. 1-5, is an effort to recognize National Student Day and participate in Make A Difference Day with service projects and community partnerships. There will be multiple opportunities to support both local and international causes.
