OMA changes name and relocates

The Office of Multicultural Affairs has changed its name to the Office of Diversity and Inclusion as of Aug. 1, 2014. Director Alicia Sanchez said, "Multiple factors influenced the name change, one being to escape the stigma of the office only being for multicultural or international students. By removing this stigma, more students can feel comfortable approaching the office for programs and assistance.

"The previous name was not inclusive of all the student demographics that the office looks to serve, such as low socioeconomic students and gender-variant minorities. In addition, the name change aligns with the university's strategic plan and will allow us to more effectively achieve goal six, which is to be a campus that reflects in staff, faculty and students the evolving diversity of society."

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion aims to cultivate and sustain an inclusive campus by creating an environment that educates, empowers and mobilizes our students, campus and community.

The office provides dynamic programs, which range from speakers and film showings to award ceremonies, cultural festivities and LGBTQA programming -- each representing a small piece of the diversity displayed on the WSU campus.

Other unique opportunities to get involved within the office include Ambassadors for Diversity and Inclusion and the Multicultural Student Mentoring Program. Various trainings are offered by the office, which include SafeZone, Gender Diversity, Cross-Cultural Communication and more.

The office has relocated to its permanent home in 208 Rhatigan Student Center. The new space is centrally located, allowing easy access for the campus community. It features a computer lab, a lounge area for students to relax and mingle between classes and a kitchenette area equipped with a refrigerator and microwave.

Sanchez is excited about the changes happening for the office and she invites everyone to come see the new space. "I encourage you to visit and explore the new space for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. We invite you to make us your home away from home," said Sanchez.
