Become a conversation leader

Dear Potential Conversation Leader,

Thank you for your interest in our program.

In case you are unfamiliar with our work in the Intensive English Language Center (IELC) at Wichita State University, let me provide you with some brief background information. Students who lack the required English proficiency for full-time academic study at WSU enroll in the IELC.

Upon arrival, students take a placement test and begin studying in one of our seven levels (Pre-Intermediate I and II, Intermediate I and II, Advanced I and II and Introduction to Academic Studies). Intermediate II students and Advanced I and II students get to participate in Conversation as part of their Speaking and Listening classes.

For the Conversation portion of the Speaking and Listening classes, students spend two hours on Wednesdays practicing their conversational English with volunteer conversation leaders. Each leader drives a small group of students to various approved places in Wichita to converse. There are no written exercises and no quizzes or tests, just conversation. Students and leaders then return to the IELC and fill out documentation regarding how the excursion went and what they learned.

If you enjoy learning about other cultures and meeting people from all over the world, you may enjoy volunteering as a conversation leader. To learn more about Conversation, please contact Cassie Zeiner at:
