Jill Docking shares history of her scholarship at LAS scholarship reception
More than 100 attendees were welcomed to the reception by Joseph Hunter, Wichita State University Foundation vice president for development. Jill Docking, representative for the William and Margery Sadowsky Scholarship, was the featured speaker.
The fund, named for Docking's parents, was created to help first-generation children attend college. According to Docking, her paternal grandparents came to the United States from Poland and had not been educated beyond fundamental schooling in their village.
"My grandparents saved every dime to send their children to college," said Docking.
She is interested in supporting young men and women who show perseverance and discipline in high school, which is likely to propel them through college.
Ron Matson, dean of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, shared several examples of the impact scholarships make on students' lives. He also provided a college update.
In addition, undergraduate and graduate student speakers Arturo Sosa and Jaron Melin, respectively, expressed their appreciation for their scholarships and the donors' generosity.
Sosa, a WSU sophomore, is the recipient of the William and Margery Sadowsky Scholarship and is involved with the Kansas Hispanics Education Development Foundation. He is majoring in business management.
Melin is the recipient of the Arthur J. Hoare Scholarship/Fellowship. He has received his bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics from WSU and plans to receive his doctorate in mathematics in 2017. He is a graduate teaching assistant and participates in the Wichita State Linux User Group.
