La Compagnie Caravague will perform 'La Lecon,' by Ionesco on Monday, Oct. 26
Ionesco, born in Romania in 1909, grew up in France -- his mother's homeland -- but returned to Romania in 1925. Desperately resisting the rise of fascism, Ionesco, a French instructor, was awarded a scholarship in 1938 to conduct research for a literary thesis in Paris. He moved there in 1940.
Influenced by the great experimental playwrights Jarry and Artaud, Ionesco created "La Lecon," during the same period as his signature work, "La Cantatrice chauve" (circa 1950). These two plays have been performed continuously since 1957 at Le Theatre de la Huchette in Paris. Ionesco was elected to the Academie Francaise in 1970, and died in Paris in 1994.
