NCAA releases Graduation Success Rate

Statistics for the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) released recently by the NCAA indicated an 80 percent GSR for Wichita State. This year's numbers reflect a four-year average for students who entered college from 2005-2008. Seven Wichita State programs registered at least an 80 percent GSR, with two programs achieving a perfect 100 percent.

Volleyball posted a perfect four-year GSR score for the fourth year in a row, and women's tennis has posted a perfect score for the fifth consecutive year, meaning for a four-year average, all student-athletes either graduated or left the program in good academic standing.

The athletic department has achieved a GSR score of 80 percent or above every year for the last seven years. Seven out of 11 Wichita State programs with scores posted 80 percent GSR rates or higher.

The GSR rate for the previous years were 83% (2007-08 class), 81% (2006-07 class), 83% (2005-06 class) and 85% (2004-05 class).

The Federal Graduation Rate data was also released. The data showed that Wichita State student-athletes entering in the 2008-09 academic year achieved a 49 percent rate, compared to the general student body, which had a 44 percent graduation rate.

This year marks the 25th release of institutional graduation rates since Federal Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act legislation was passed in 1990. In 2005, the NCAA Division I Committee on Academic Performance implemented the initial release of the GSR in order to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes.
