Weapons Safety Open Forum for all faculty and staff

All WSU faculty and staff are invited to participate in a Weapons Safety Open Forum from 10 a.m.-noon Friday, Dec. 4, in 211 Hubbard Hall to discuss the pending extension of Kansas weapons policies to include university campuses. The purpose of the forum is to engage WSU faculty and staff in an open discussion of the impacts of allowing weapons to be carried on campus, such as their impact on campus culture, climate and collective safety.

Currently state universities across Kansas are exempt from the law and may ban guns from their campuses. The right to exempt campuses from the law ceases on July 1, 2017, at which time concealed carry will be permitted. The Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) is currently drafting a number of proposed amendments to the weapons policy. The board plans to complete the proposed amendments by the end of the year 2015.

The board has called for comments from university constituents.

The open forum is the result of a joint effort among the faculty, unclassified professional and university support staff senates, and your participation is encouraged and appreciated. We expect to continue the discussion of KBOR amendments at future events during spring 2016.
