Shocker Speakout results

More than 950 students in 38 sections of Comm 111 began the fall 2015 semester. Each section selected its outstanding persuasive policy speaker, and those students competed in the preliminary round Friday, Dec. 4. For being chosen as their section representatives, those speakers received all 100 points possible for their policy speeches. The six winners from the Preliminary Round competed in the final round held in the CAC Theater.

As the first place finisher, Baine Dikeman, WSU freshman and former Mulvane H.S. debater, won $100 from McGraw-Hill, publisher of the Comm 111 textbook. Dikeman's topic was the U.S. government should place the walrus on the endangered species list. Dikeman's name will be engraved on a plaque hanging in the commons area of Elliott Hall.

The five runners-up also received money from McGraw-Hill.

Judges for the event included Kerry Jones, director of the Writing Center and Fairmount lecturer of English; Pam O'Neal, recruiting manager at the WSU Office of Adult Learning; Kathy Stewart, assistant director of Disability Services; and Matt Cecil, director of the Elliott School of Communication.
