Story Time: Kansas African American History

Angela Bates, executive director of the Nicodemus Historical Society, will share stories about Kansas African American History from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in the RSC Fast Break Lounge. Nicodemus, a small unincorporated town in Graham County, is the only remaining western town that was established by African Americans during the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War. The discussion will explore stories of children conceived in slavery but born free, the experiences of mothers during this transitional time, and how baby names were changed or used to reflect attitudes about free-born children. Experience Kansas history through stories and artifacts in this event co-sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Kansas Humanities Council and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
