Gender and Sexuality Conference recap

More than 110 people pre-registered and 19 walk-in participants representing a variety of community agencies, attended the recent Gender and Sexuality Conference. Eleven Kansas colleges/universities and students from East High attended. University co-sponsors included the Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the Elliott School of Communication, as well as student groups, the Shocker Soc Club and Alpha Kappa Delta.

Outside funding assistance was received from the National Alpha Kappa Delta organization and WSU's Student Government Association. We also received one of the 2016 Sorokin Lecture grants from the American Sociological Association (ASA).

Our keynote speaker this year was Lisa Wade. She co-wrote the text used in Soc 306 and is co-founder of the popular blog, Sociological Images. Wade received the 2015 Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award from ASA.

Charlene Muehlenhard from KU also presented her latest work on sexual consent.

The opening session consisted of three undergraduate students and one graduate student who developed projects in their sociology classes.
