2016 WSU Japan Festival: A lens in to Japanese culture and language

Together with the Japanese Culture Association, Wichita State University's Modern and Classical Languages and Literature Department (MCLL) Japanese program will hold its annual Japan Festival from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, April 22. There will be stage shows and booths set up at the Rhatigan Student Center in the lobby and rooms 142 and 258. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

"It's a great opportunity to experience a piece of Japanese culture, which we don't have many opportunities for in Wichita," said Davis Peck, president of the Japanese Culture Association.

Major activities include a role play contest and cultural performances. Jennifer Musaji, a former Japanese student from WSU who taught English in Japan for four years, will share information about the JET Program. Wilson Baldridge from the MCLL Department will read a famous Japanese poem about Mt. Fuji, while two students who recently returned from Japan will discuss study abroad opportunities.

Students from Japanese 111 will perform original skits, and 112 classes will perform their own versions of the Japanese folk story "Momotarou" (Peach Boy) in Japanese.

An instructor at Konara-han Bujutsu will perform martial arts and Japanese students will share Japanese songs and music near the end of the festival.

Along with the stage performances, Japanese crafts, origami, Anime and calligraphy will be set up in 142 and 258 RSC. Japanese international students at WSU will provide interesting activities, and there will be a scavenger hunt with two movies as prizes. Film class students will have film screenings, as well as provide information about the Fukushima nuclear disaster and nuclear weapon testing. A variety of Japanese food will also be available outside of the RSC.
