GoBabyGo! Project schedules delivery for this afternoon (Friday, May 6)

I wanted to make you aware of a potential story"a collaboration between Wichita State University's College of Engineering, physical therapy, and Rainbows United.

We will have our second of two car deliveries for the GoBabyGo! Project at 3:30 p.m. today (Friday, May 6) in Beggs Hall lobby at WSU. This project takes an off-the-shelf ride-on toy car and modifies it for kids with disabilities. Friday's recipient is 3-year old Jocelyn, who has dwarfism.

As part of the ENGR 202 Service Learning in Engineering course, engineering students had a budget of $250 for each car and worked with lab manager Nathan Smith to make the modifications. Jocelyn's car required complete rewiring and programming an arduino-controlled joystick to replace the traditional steering wheel/accelerator pedal. PT students Alice and Lani took Jocelyn's initial measurements and will help do a final fit on Friday at delivery.

We hope to do more builds in the future outside of the course and will extend an invitation to the community to participate.

Participants:
-- Jocelyn, 3 years old with dwarfism
-- Eileen, 1 year old with spina bifida
-- Beth Watkins, SLP @ Rainbows (helped identify the children and their PTs)
-- Gail Laochinda, PT @ Rainbows, Jocelyn's PT
-- Tori Price, DPT @ Rainbows, , Eileen's PT
-- Nathan Smith, lab manager for Electrical Engineering
-- Samantha Corcoran, engineering educator
-- PT students: Lani Martin, Alice Hartman
-- Engineering students: Mohammad Bu Jbara, Alia Qasem, Jordan Phimmasone, Bryce Martin, Jihan Weerasekerapandtha

We are working on creating a webpage at http://www.wichita.edu/gobabygo and a Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/WSUGoBabyGo for those interested in learning more, volunteering or sponsoring a build.
