Media invited to a demo of NIAR Virtual Reality Lab's new immersive CAVE

The National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University will hold a media demo of its new immersive CAVE, designed specifically for the university's new 3DExperience Center. It is the largest reconfigurable FLEX movable wall immersive visualization system ever deployed by Mechdyne.

What: A demo of the new Mechdyne CAVE, which will be installed in the 3DExperience Center when it opens in the Experiential Engineering Building on WSU's Innovation Campus this fall.

When: 1:30-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 21

Where: MESA building, Room 102 (directly behind the NIAR building at Wichita State); parking available in the NIAR visitor lot and behind the NIAR building

Wichita State University's National Institute for Aviation Research has partnered with Dassault Systemes and Mechdyne Corp. to custom design, build and install an immersive CAVE, which will allow WSU to use virtual reality capabilities to:

- Strengthen and diversify the south Kansas advanced manufacturing supply chain
- Increase quality and scope of products across industries, such as aerospace and defense technologies
- Increase the competitiveness and sustainability of aerospace and defense-related business

The project was recently awarded the 2016 Integration Award for the Best Higher Education Project from Commercial Integrator during an awards ceremony at InfoComm, the largest professional audiovisual trade show in North America.

"Our primary vision is to transform manufacturing across multiple industries: aerospace and defense, life sciences and industrial equipment -- through innovative technology," says Jeff Fisher, WSU-NIAR virtual reality lab manager.

Funding for the immersive CAVE was made possible by a 2015 grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration grant aimed at creating new manufacturing jobs.

The 3DExperience Center, a partnership with Dassault Systemes, will establish advanced manufacturing technology in the new Experiential Engineering Building on Wichita State's Innovation Campus. The center will focus on enabling advanced product development and manufacturing, next-generation manufacturing materials and technology using the 3DExperience platform, a Multi-Robotic Advanced Manufacturing system and simulation validation using an immersive CAVE system.
